Let's Talk About "IT"September 2009 E-Newsletter |

This month's e-news is dedicated to and highlights four brave women, Lauren, April, Lauren and the survivor who chooses to remain anonymous. These new Sisters 4 Change are the catharsis for the No Woman Left Behind Campaign. They are an inspiration to us and an example of how we can all be a part of the solution to ending sexual violence. If you have not seen the 20/20 piece on the DeAnza College gang rape we have included links to it in this newsletter so please take a few minutes to check it out and please share it with your friends and colleagues. Also included in this month's e-news is an introduction to bystander prevention. Like the women in this article, we all have the capacity to make a difference, the question is when the time comes will we choose to get involved? "When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." -- Audre Lorde The Let's Talk About "IT" '09 Fall Tour makes a stop at Concordia University

GETTING DOWN WITH BYSTANDER PREVENTIONOne of the common themes of empowerment we hear from students all across the country over and over again is the role of friends or acquaintances who step in and prevent or stop an act of violence. We celebrate these everyday heroes, but most of them have no idea they are on the forefront of violence prevention. While they may not know what "bystander prevention" is, their actions are helping to shift violence prevention to being proactive rather than reactive. When it comes to bystander prevention it helps if we think of the world as one big happy family. That's the core of what bystander prevention is all about: looking out for one another. Not just on occasion, but in daily practice. The beauty and challenge of bystander prevention is that it's a societal shift, asking groups to step out of the former norms. The beauty: no one is out there alone. The challenge: we must all stand up together. Not as a call to just men or women but to all people who want to live in a culture that eradicates statistics rather than one that feeds them. With bystander prevention, we become a part of something and this sense of community is why we believe bystander prevention is gaining popularity in the antiviolence movement and why it has the power to be effective. We think of bystander prevention as the ultimate Golden Rule: the whole do-unto-others policy amplified. We all deserve to matter, and we can all take ownership of our fellow men and women. Effective bystander prevention programs on campus can increase people's awareness of sexual assault, teaching them to recognize warning behaviors that may require intervention and how to intervene safely and effectively.
